Buying for parents in their sixties and seventies is a different problem: they have what they need, but the versions they own are often ten years old. These picks are the current models of things that make day-to-day life easier, chosen so the setup falls on you, not them.

Amazon

Kindle Paperwhite (2026)

From $199.99 Signature Edition $249Latest model · Oct 2026

Upgrades An old Kindle, or squinting at an iPad in bed

What's new

Thinner and lighter, with an edge-to-edge 7-inch screen Amazon calls its highest-contrast yet. It has warm light for evenings, is waterproof, and lasts up to 12 weeks per charge.

Best for: Parents who read every night and complain about small print

Text size is adjustable on every Kindle, which turns any book into a large-print book. That's the real gift for aging eyes. At checkout, choose the gift option so it isn't registered to your account.

Skip it if: They have the 2024 Paperwhite. The new one is thinner and lighter, but it's an incremental change.

Apple

Apple Watch SE 3

From $249Latest model · Sept 2025

Upgrades No smartwatch, or an Apple Watch Series 3–5

What's new

The first SE with an always-on display, plus the S10 chip, sleep apnea notifications and fast charging. Like every current Apple Watch, it has fall detection and Emergency SOS.

Best for: A parent who lives alone or spends a lot of time on their own

Fall detection can call emergency services and alert family if they take a hard fall and don't respond. That's the reason to buy it; the rest is a bonus. Get the cellular version if they don't carry their phone everywhere.

Skip it if: They don't have an iPhone. Apple Watch only pairs with iPhone.

Apple

AirPods Pro 3

$249 has dropped to ~$179 on saleLatest model · Sept 2025

Upgrades AirPods Pro 2, or no hearing help at all

What's new

Apple says noise cancelling is twice as strong as AirPods Pro 2, there's a built-in heart-rate sensor, and the hearing aid mode now runs up to 10 hours on a charge.

Best for: A parent with mild-to-moderate hearing loss who keeps putting off hearing aids

The hearing aid feature is FDA-authorized for mild to moderate hearing loss and is set up with a hearing test on their iPhone. It doesn't replace an audiologist, but it's often the nudge someone needs.

Skip it if: Their hearing loss is more than mild to moderate, or they don't use an iPhone. Either one rules out the hearing aid feature.

Amazon

Echo Show 11

$219.99 often ~$180 on saleLatest model · Nov 2025

Upgrades An older Echo Show, or FaceTime on a propped-up phone

What's new

An 11-inch 1080p screen, a 13MP camera that keeps them framed on video calls, a faster processor, and Amazon's new Alexa+ (free with Prime). It doubles as a photo frame and has a physical camera and mic shutoff.

Best for: Grandparents who want to see the grandkids more often

Video calls without anyone holding a phone. You call, the screen lights up, and the camera follows them around the kitchen.

Skip it if: They'd never be comfortable with a camera and microphone in the house, even with a physical shutter.

Aura

Aura Aspen Frame

$229Latest model · 2025

Upgrades An old digital frame loaded from a USB stick

What's new

A 12-inch HD screen and photo captions, so they know who's in the picture and where it was taken. Anyone invited can add photos from their phone through Aura's app.

Best for: Any parent. It's the lowest-risk gift on this page.

Pre-load it with photos before it leaves your house; they just plug it in. Then you, your siblings and the grandkids keep sending new ones for years. Aura's newest frame is the $499 Ink, a cordless color e-paper model, but for parents the brighter, simpler Aspen is the better pick.

Skip it if: They don't have Wi-Fi at home. The frame needs it to receive new photos.
