Most men in their thirties and forties will say they don't want anything, then quietly use the same headphones until they fall apart. That's the opening. Every pick here is the current version of something he already does — music, training, gaming, recording the kids — with a plain answer on whether the upgrade is worth it.

Apple

AirPods Max 2

$549 older USB-C model often ~$430Latest model · Apr 2026

Upgrades Original AirPods Max, or any older over-ear headphones

What's new

Apple's H2 chip and noise cancelling Apple rates up to 1.5x stronger, plus Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness and Live Translation. Lossless audio when plugged in over USB-C.

Best for: iPhone users who commute, fly, or work in a loud office

The design and colors haven't changed, so all the upgrade is inside. Coming from a cheaper pair, the jump is big. Coming from the original Max, it's mainly noise cancelling.

Skip it if: He uses Android. Get the Sony WH-1000XM6 ($449) instead: Sony's newest flagship, with a new noise-cancelling processor and 12 microphones.

Meta × Ray-Ban

Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 3)

From $449Latest model · Sept 2026

Upgrades Gen 1 or Gen 2 Ray-Ban Meta, or ordinary sunglasses

What's new

Up to 9 hours of battery (one more than Gen 2), six redesigned microphones for clearer calls, a new action button for Meta AI or quick capture, and new Aviator and Zena frames.

Best for: The dad who never gets his phone out in time to film the kids

Hands-free photos and video from eye level, open-ear audio and calls, in frames that look like regular Ray-Bans. If the budget is tight, a discounted Gen 2 does nearly the same job.

Skip it if: He already has Gen 2. Most of Gen 3's software features are coming to Gen 2 as well, and the hardware gains are modest.

Apple

Apple Watch Ultra 4

From $799Latest model · Sept 2026

Upgrades Apple Watch Ultra 1 or 2, or a Series watch he charges every night

What's new

Apple's S11 chip, the same redesigned heart-sensor system as Series 12, and battery rated for up to 50 hours.

Best for: Runners, hikers, cyclists, and anyone who hates charging a watch daily

The real reason to pick the Ultra over the Series 12 is battery: about two days between charges instead of one, in a titanium case built for the outdoors.

Skip it if: He has an Ultra 3. It's only a year old, and the changes don't justify $800.

Nintendo

Nintendo Switch 2

$499.99 Mario Kart World bundle $549.99Latest model · June 2025

Upgrades The original Nintendo Switch

What's new

A bigger 1080p screen, 4K output on the TV, larger magnetic Joy-Con that can work like a mouse, built-in GameChat, and it plays most original Switch games.

Best for: The guy who grew up on Nintendo and wants something to play with his kids

Nintendo raised the price to $499.99 on September 1. That makes the $549.99 Mario Kart World bundle the smart buy, since the game alone sells for about $80.

Skip it if: He only games on a PC or PlayStation, or never touched his original Switch.

Best for: Lifters, runners, and anyone with a desk-job back

Therabody's sweet-spot model got tougher this year. It's hit about $200 in several sales this year, so don't pay full price over the holidays.

Skip it if: He has a Gen 5 Prime. The motor and speeds are much the same; the upgrade is durability.
